Party of Helicopters - Please Believe It

I realized how jaded my opinions have become regarding music this year. I picked this album out to review it based on me thinking the name of the band is ridiculous (which it is). Regardless, I also expected the album to suck royally, and looked forward to the opportunity to bash an album, as it’s been a very long time. Perhaps it was the write up in CMJ comparing them to My Bloody Valentine, an easy way to cause my eyes to roll. Nonetheless I did not expect to enjoy Please Believe It.

However, after listening to it a few times, I shockingly found it was a solid album. Please Believe It is a very well done album, albeit nothing spectacular. The album opens up with the catchy feedback laden riff of “The Good Punk” which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Party of Helicopters drenches their sound in crunchy guitars playing powerful riffs. The album remains heavy throughout, but doesn’t overdo it to the point of just giving one a headache. “Never Ending Cycle” is the album’s strongest track following the trend of catchy hooks and heavy feedback. My only complaint with Please Believe It lies in the fact that it does get a little repetitive and lacks diversity from track to track. That, and track nine, “Boston” is horribly derivative of the Foo Fighters.

Overall, Please Believe It is a solid effort from a band I did not expect to be good. Catchy, feedback-laden guitar riffs and infectious drum hooks permeate the album making it light musical entertainment. Nothing really earth shattering on this CD, and I most likely would buy it only if it’s on sale. However, Party of Helicopters seems to be a strong band with a promising future. There, that didn’t sound too jaded and pretentious, did it?
