Zero 7 - When it Falls

Elektra Records, 3.0 / 5.0

Zero 7’s debut album Simple Things was clearly one of the best releases of 2001; however, most critics merely labeled the band imitators of the more popular electronica band Air. Ironically, Zero 7’s sophomore record, When It Falls, became available to the public within weeks of the distribution of Air’s new album Talkie Walkie. Yet once again the British duo has composed a series of beautiful tracks that are capable of forming their own fan base, free from the sympathy of Air’s fan base. The formula is the same. Sam Hardaker and Henry Bins (the two composers of the band) define mellow with raindrop keyboards, gentle strings, and caressing melodies while relying on the soothing Sia Furler and Sophie Barker to give the songs their vocal backing. Living in harmony between experimental downbeat music and well-crafted pop songs, Zero 7 has made an album that is as warm, stunning, and flowing as Simple Things; and it is this accomplishment that is the problem.

When it Falls could have easily been disc two of their debut album. Such tracks as “Home” and “Somersault” are almost mirroring the genius of “Destiny” and “In the Waiting Line.” Other tracks that dabble in more experimental and less structured ele tronic stylings, such as “Look Up” and “The Space Between,” will remind fans of “Likufanele” and “End Theme.” Basically, Zero 7 seems to be reminding its fans of how spectacular that initial listen of Simple Things was three years ago. This mild criticism is not to say the songs are mind-numbing nor is the craving to memorize the album disheartened, yet one hopes the group will realize that they have already mastered this genre. If Zero 7 intends on keeping up with the empowering Air, their sound will have to be more revolutionary on their next release. In conclusion, When it Falls is a wise purchase for fans that want unhurried, graceful songs that they can burn incense and fall asleep to. Zero 7 may not gain any new fans with this release but it certainly will not lose any, either.
