CD Review: Scott H. Biram: The Dirty Old One Man Band (8/10)
With the release of Scott H. Biram’s album The Dirty Old One Man Band it’s clear that music of all different types have their place in the world. It’s difficult to describe this album; it’s apparently just a good-humored mix of blues and rock, but it’s somewhat hard to decipher the genre exactly. There’s something quite catchy and uplifting about it though, despite its randomness.
The first song entitled “Blood Sweat & Murder” begins the album with an upbeat, bop-your-head-to-the-music feel to it. It might be hard to get into the tunes right off the bat. A second run through the album might do some better justice for it.
Another great song from the album is “Wreck My Car” which is a little tune about love and being heartbroken. It’s a sweet song that is both pleasurable and entertaining to listen to. The lyrics that hold the namesake of this song are such as this: “You try to break my heart… rather you’d just go out and wreck my car.” At the end of the song, Scott H. Biram announces to his audience, “That’s a little song I wrote at the candy store.” It seems such a charming ending to a harmonious little song.
Not too much further into the album is the song “I See The Light/What’s His Name?” which is another tune that sets one to bopping their head or tapping their foot. It’s almost as if with his music you can’t help but play along.
Not only is Scott H. Biram’s music delightfully unique, but it’s so random at points that you’ll find yourself laughing out loud. Case in point is the song “Whiskey” where frequently and randomly you’ll hear “Ahhhh, whiskey!” boomed out in quite an interesting voice.
It’s just quite different and thrilling at times, because things are so unexpected and the whole album is like an exciting surprise. Though, fortunately enough, the album is not complete chaos. The music holds consistency and, although each song sounds uniquely different, there’s still a good feel for the music throughout the album.
So if you’re up for a change, or just for some interesting new tunes, pick up a copy of Scott H. Biram’s new album The Dirty Old One Man Band, but expect to hear random yodeling, harmonicas, catchy songs, and odd phrases that are amusing at the least.
