Sky Saw Review (3/10)

The band Sky Saw is an instrumental duo (Core Redonnett and Yuri Zbitnoff) composed of “psychedelic shred rock with electronica, trance, and free improv,” as is stated on their website, www.sky-saw.com.

Sky Saw isn’t really unique and entertaining to listen to, but isn’t completely ear-deafening either. Their 20-minute song “The Garden of Forking Paths” is the same repetitive sound over and over again. And not surprisingly, another 20-minute song entitled “Infinite Dave” has the same sort of tune that is repeated without any real variation.

I suppose a good way to explain Sky Saw is by a definition I heard described by someone. They said that it sounded like “that music that you hear in the background of video games that you don’t really listen to but it’s the same music over and over again.” Although that’s a little harsh to say, I have to agree with it. It’s like a plot-less movie where you keep waiting for that big event to happen, but it never does. And in that way, it’s unsatisfying.

But Sky Saw, like I said, isn’t a complete waste. It could be worse in the sense that there could be absolutely NO value in it whatsoever. But I think the duo have potential to create some really great music, it’s just that they don’t seem to put the effort into making their music sound different and they don’t include any real variety. The duo could better this CD by making it into something original, with more feeling put into it, more variation, and more technique.

As it is, Sky Saw just stands as an example of bland, redundant and non-inspiring music. It’s the kind of music that you wouldn’t really think twice about, and if you heard it, you’d simply forget about it minutes later. The reason it doesn’t stick in your head because it’s too much like other repetitive music that you’ve heard before. Sky Saw isn’t completely agonizing to listen to, but it’s just not anything that’s going to provoke you into wanting more or even remembering it.
