**Kuni’s Takes The Cake

Restaurant Review - Kuni’s (4 out of 5 G's)

Kuni's Sushi Bar creates a new high standard of Japanese dining in Buffalo. Located on Elmwood Street, this restaurant has three major passions: A passion for food, a passion for a comfortable atmosphere, and a passion for making their guests fully satisfied. Thanks to Kuni’s attention to detail in providing many exotic dishes, a snug atmosphere and friendly service, these three passions are fully realized.

Kuni’s has a large menu with a wide range of entrees. The customary dishes available are the Tempura shrimp, Tako, as well as the ever popular Gyoza. Tempting original entrees are offered as well, including prawn spring rolls and the mouth-watering, Thai style squid salad. There is also a wide selection of desserts (such as green tea ice cream) that finish off any of Kuni’s delicious meals. Their sushi and sashimi treats are all arranged with a variety of carefully chosen fish. Highly recommended plates include the Magro (tuna) sashimi or the Tako, which is octopus.

One of Kuni’s most unique features is its small, intimate atmosphere. Even though there are only about 6-7 tables and about 10 more seats at the sushi bar, the compactness helps to create a homey, warm dining experience. You can also watch your meal be assembled from any table in the restaurant. However, with the limited space, one must be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for a table. This is no problem due to Kuni’s central location on Elmwood; one can easily grab a coffee across the street or browse in the shops nearby to help the time pass. Since they don’t take reservations, take-out is also available if time becomes an issue.

Despite the great sushi and comfortable surroundings, the portions tend to be on the small side, especially for the rolls. As is to be expected with any sushi restaurant, the prices are a bit expensive for the average college student as well. Expect to fish out around 20 dollars for a fulfilling meal, such as a drink, an entree of sushi and a dessert.

Although the restaurant is small and the wait can be long, the sushi makes dining at Kuni’s a worthy experience. The wait staff is very patient and never rude at any point, even when they are obviously frazzled and stressed due to the large crowd of people waiting to be served.

This is the perfect restaurant for all sushi lovers. The high quality of the fish presented and the personal experience (the owner of the restaurant preparing your meal right in front of you), makes Kuni’s worth the wait and empty wallet. It is easily among the best sushi restaurants in Buffalo. The sushi is always fresh, and the variety of dishes and attentive service contribute to a great time. Make sure you pay Kuni’s Sushi Bar a visit soon.
