comments, concerns, or just plain bitching

Dear Joe LiButti,

Thank you for including me in your publication Generation. It's an honor I'm sure, granted I'd never heard of you or your paper until this very day when I Google-searched "Cowboys Of Scotland," looking to recall the date of a show I'd done with them. It was then that I saw the words, "unknown comedian" and was immediately prompted to read the article, in full, to see what some penholder had done with my performance and the performance of my friends. Had they glorified it? Had they walked in late? Who was this person, and where is this being read?

Having read the article, I've now realized that you sir did indeed see my performance, yet still titled me, "unknown comedian." This stings more than any other negative or foul thing you could have to say about me. I know full well that we all have our good shows and our bad. I know that some (people) will like you, and no matter what you do, others won't. If I got depressed about a bad review, I'd be a horrible performer who deserved not to re-take the stage, but to hang up the mic and quit. I have no objections concerning what you wrote about me, however I do have a name.

I am the Rated-R Rockstar Josh Smith.

This is not hate mail. This is not an angry rant. I sincerely thank you for dedicating valuable ink to reviewing a last-minute addition to a show. Just to be technically sound though, you referred to me as an "opening act" for Yip-Yip when in fact I was not. As I announced, I was a time killer. I had the night off for a change and was eager to go and support my friends in "Cowboys Of Scotland". It was at Soundlab that schedule problems had arisen and "Cowboys" could not take the stage for another twenty minutes. It was at the request of "Cowboys" and the owner of Soundlab, who had seen me before in his venue performing in June 2007, that I got up on the stage, unprepared, and killed time. Should you evaluate my performance in that regard, it was pulled off to a tee.

This mistake does not call for a re-write, nor does it call for a retraction. You cannot call what you do not see. Yes I was introduced. Twice. Yes I announced I was a timekiller. However Mr. LiButti, you evaluated how funny I was, which I reckon for you, was the bottom line, as it should have been. I just want to make sure for you and I, that the record reads: "The Rated-R Rockstar" Josh Smith, a good friend, a dedicated man, and a hardworking performer.

Thank you again for including me in your newspaper. May the next time be with a name, and with a better showing under my belt.

Sincerely,

The Rated-R Rockstar Josh Smith
