God Save Us All

On Monday, The Spectrum’s Life Editor Stephanie “Wealthy Family Residing in Amherst” Sciandra, decided to take a stance against our nation’s poor. She called single motherhood a “personal choice,” wishing, sarcastically that she could be a single mother too, so she could start reaping the benefits. Which is okay, because I figure most people read the piece as the meaningless work of a somewhat repressed faux conservative, had a laugh, and put it down.

Things were worse the week before, though, when old Steph wrote a piece in which she talked about the trials and tribulations wealthy Americans like her (parents) go through in order to pay for their health insurance. But then, right in the middle of an otherwise dull, Fox News pundit type of rant, she did something a little weird. “Those who are still off fighting the Civil War might still be tempted to think Hillary should head back to the kitchen and Barack should get back in his shackles, rather than run for the presidency.”

Hey, Steffie! That’s really very uncomfortable for everybody! Boy, thank God you don’t think that; it’s just those damned Civil War soldiers, at it again with the shackle talk. When will they learn?

The editorial implies that students should vote for a candidate who gets closest to universal health care, so long as they know that the candidates with the most liberal health care plans can’t win because one is black and one is a woman. So even though she thinks democrats have a better health care plan, we shouldn’t vote for them. The thing about the shackles was just for fun.

Anyway, I liked it better when she wrote that thing right after that movie star died about the neo-Nazis that threatened to picket his funeral. About the “obviously sinful theme” of the late actor’s film role as a gay cowboy? I liked it because it showed her true colors. She searched the Internet for something fucked up to write about, so she could have a little fun while acknowledging herself as the moral higher-up. It’s a funny manipulation she uses once again here. I’m not a supporter of gay marriage, good heavens no, but I disagree with these bastards goddammit! They’re wrong to picket Iraq War soldiers’ funerals and scream “God hates fags!”

You just wanted to write that phrase in a student newspaper and attribute it to somebody else.

The Spectrum editorials from past weeks have been like a diseased animal, spewing this spiteful anger to thousands of students. The selection included a student’s “My Turn” column about how all students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons at UB (one week after the student shooting at Northern Illinois University), and a detailed editorial about the unconstitutionality (or something) of a women’s rights presentation about abortion.

Worst of all, students don’t care enough to write letters about this shit, which makes it seem like no one cares. Either that or the letters just don’t make it to print.

The Spectrum, just like Generation, is a student publication. That means you have the unalienable right to come up here and tell us how to do our jobs. Shit, you can even come up here and apply to do our jobs for us. Letters of intent for Generation’s editorial positions will be due at the end of March. Probably unbeknownst to you, The Spectrum will hold their election Monday, probably before you’ll get a chance to read this.

Which is a shame, because Stephanie Sciandra is up against Managing Editor Josh Boston for editor in chief of the paper. It’s like I’ve been saying, “No Hate in ‘08.”

And this girl hates.
