I need you to understand how much I hate chick flicks. I much rather would have seen Defiance or… well, Defiance, but on Friday, February 6, my friend decided we should have a girly night, and go to the opening of He’s Just Not That Into You. We bought our tickets early, and by the time we stopped shopping and went to see the show, the theatre was filled. “I need to get away from all this estrogen,” she remarked-which was completely true. The theatre was filled with women. There were only a few guys who grew some and came with their girlfriends.
The movie is a chick flick. He’s Just Not That Into You follows the endearing, if incredibly awkward, Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) and her friends as they weather the perils of dating, boyfriends and cheating husbands. The film begins with the question: why are “we all programmed to believe that if a guy acts like a total jerk that means he likes you”? Perhaps because we are taught as little girls that a boy pushing you down at the playground means he has a crush on you.
Lies.
In He’s Just Not That Into You, all the characters are some how interrelated to one another. You’d need a flow chart to keep everything straight. Gigi befriends bartender, Alex (Justin Long), who is a date-gone-wrong’s roommate who is dating Scarlett Johansen’s character who is… You get the picture. Jennifer Connelly plays Gigi’s uptight best friend, Janine. Their relationship is the best in the movie. No matter how many guys there are, a best friend to come crying to is vital.
Essentially, the movie follows the formulaic chick flick script: girl’s love life sucks, girl meets guy, guy hurts girl, they kiss and make up. But with so many different story lines, it’s hard to call this movie “formulaic.” He’s Just Not That Into You is a unique take on relationships, human behavior, chick flicks...and the question of dating and technology? “I had this guy leave me a voice mail at work, so I called him at home, and then he emailed me to my BlackBerry, and so I texted to his cell, and now you just have to go around checking all these different portals just to get rejected by seven different technologies. It’s exhausting,” says Barrymore’s chracter, Mary.
Jennifer Aniston’s role really stands out. She seems to have broken out of her constant “Rachel” character acting. And especially unlike Rachel, she isn’t annoying in this role. In fact, she’s not a ditz at all. Goodwin is loveable as Gigi, and viewers can totally see themselves in her as she freaks out about not being called after a date.
He’s Just Not That Into You is funny. It’s awkward. It’s tear-jerking (shut up), and most of the issues dealt with are real problems in the dating world. Dating isn’t any easier after middle school, high school, college… For a chick flick, the movie is done very well, with good acting and fun dialogue. Girls, if you need something to do on a Friday night, this is it. Guys? Run far, far away.
This was an entertaining flick but I would not recommend it for the guys.
