Hail To The King

Jim Gaffigan - King Baby [DVD]

Jim Gaffigan made a splash in the comedy world back in 2005 with the release of his acclaimed album Beyond the Pale. Fans loved it for traditional Gaffigan antics while newcomers found a comedian with broad appeal through discussions about Jesus, Cinnabons, and most importantly, Hot Pockets. It was these hilarious insights and observations that secured his relevance in the world of stand-up comedy, and they shine through now more than ever in his latest release, King Baby.

If you missed the feature when it aired on Comedy Central, this DVD is more than worth the price tag, delivering a solid set list of quality bits that cover bowling, bacon, circumcision, and Waffle House. If ever there was a comedian to be criticized for recycling the same gag, Jim Gaffigan would not be him. Every joke delivers a punch to a side on the verge of splitting. Though the fan favorite Hot Pocket bit isn’t present on this disc, I’m sure they will find something else to add to their definition of signature Gaffigan. I would like to tell you what that something else would be, but everything here is so good, that nothing seems to stand out moreso than the rest.

Even if you were one of those that did catch the special on TV, I still urge you check out this disc, especially if you consider yourself a fan. Not content with simply phoning in the extras, King Baby is loaded to the brim with extra content. There are two full length interviews, one which is more of a joke and the other, which is the more personal XM Unmasked interview which provides some deep insight into Gaffigan’s life while providing some laughs in between. On the less serious side of things are a small handful of episodes of Pale Force and Our Massive Earth. Pale Force sees Gaffigan teaming up with Conan O’Brien to form a superhero duo delivering pale-skinned justice. It’s definitely on the Adult Swim side of funny and serves to be an entertaining distraction. Similarly, Our Massive Planet shows footage of animals while Gaffigan is being interviewed as some sort of zoologist. It definitely has its moments with lines such as “A zebra is simply a more stylish horse,” which leads to “Donkeys are like a third cousin to the horse.” The taste of the “minisode”-like content will leave you searching for more. Rounding out the extras is the compilation of skits that took place during commercial breaks of Friday Night Stand-up on Comedy Central. Though this is the least interesting of the extra features, it’s certainly humorous to see Gaffigan talk about his gift from the Pope.

If you like your comedy witty, stupid, and intriguing, chances are you’ll find something to like on this disc. Jim Gaffigan has a set style of comedy that has been so successful for a reason: it works. It will keep you on your toes and constantly catch you off-guard while sticking to the fundamentals that brought him so far. If there was ever any doubt that Jim Gaffigan is a great comedian, then those can be firmly pushed aside for good with the release of King Baby.
