Two Turn Tables and a Microphone

The "Godfather of Hip Hop," the man who started it all, DJ Kool Herc will perform at Buffalo’s Baby Steps. The first DJ to dissect the break beat, using two turn tables and a mixer, will be at Broadway Joe’s (3051 Main St. Buffalo) Thursday, September 21st,at 11pm, courtesy of Baby Steps and The Lantern Productions.

In a recent TIME cover story America was dubbed a "Hip Hop Nation" due largely, if not completely, to Kool Herc’s experiments in the South Bronx during the late 70’s, where he created turn tables/DJ’ing while organizing shows in the local parks and school yards. The cornerstone of any comprehensive book or documentary on hip hop is inevitably Kool Herc who not only "broke beats," but was the first to chant over the rhythms vocally, which paved the way for rappers today. As his music gained popularity Kool Herc employed an MC during his ground breaking performances, the first rapper.

Hip hop has saturated American culture as a whole. Much of today’s fashion, dance and street slang can be attributed to these raw beginnings in the South Bronx. Kool Herc coined the term "B-Boy" which means "Beat Boy," "Break Boy," and/or "Bronx Boy," and his music was the original soundtrack to break dancing, the 80’s phenomenon which brought urban culture to the forefront of American style.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Kool Herc came to the United States in 1969 where he, the South Bronx, and his audience found each other. Kool Herc began DJ’ing, using a Jamaican styled, mobile stereo system and soon parties could be found anywhere at anytime. Now Kool Herc brings his party to Buffalo...finally!

The show will be $6 at the door, peace is a requisite, no knuckle heads and no one under 21
