In 1886, the University at Buffalo adopted white and blue as the official university colors when the school expanded from consisting of solely the medical school to incorporating a College of Pharmacy. The Medical Department had been tying its graduatesí diplomas with a white ribbon for the forty years it had been graduating students and the College of Pharmacy made the decision to tie their diplomas with a blue ribbon to distinguish those from the Medical Departmentís. The school colors were properly referred to as ìwhite and blue.î However, the school colors are now referred to as ìblue and white.î
