Members of a little known student athletics team are currently in danger of being shut down because of a lack of funding. The Mathletes have only received $22.32 in funding this year and its members are screaming for justice. Many members of the Mathletes squad feel that their lack of funding is a direct result of increased funding to sports that are deemed more important by the UA administration. "I realize that the move to Division 1-A means we have to give more to the football team, but people have to realize that we are also participating in Division 1-A and trust me, Division 1-A Mathletics has very tough competition," said Mathletes Head Coach Jeffrey Heyman. The lack of funds has forced the Mathletes to take matters into their own hands regarding fundraising for their team, "We’ve tried a few things to raise some money for the team, we had a bake sale and a raffle, but they didn’t do us much good. The only thing that seemed to raise us a decent amount of money was the mud wrestling against the chess team that we did a couple weeks ago, but we had to split that money with those chess playing losers," said Team Captain Marc Bell. "This is my first year as a mathlete and I was really looking forward to the big Mathlete meet in Cleveland, but now we just get to compete with Mathletes at Amherst State, and they suck," said first year Mathlete Doug King. At this point in time the fate of the Mathletes is still unknown. One must ask themselves, can UA continue to ignore such vital teams like the mathletes while squandering money on the likes of football and still be a third tier school? As Heyman put it, "Can a football player tell you 4,567 x 3,456 in a matter of seconds? I can. It’s 15,783,552. If the administration thinks all that’s worth is $22.32, then they can’t even put 2 and 2 together."
