On Saturday, March 24, 2001, 3 am, UA student Jeffery Rich reported that he, "could not find his remote anywhere." When asked, Rich stated, "Dude, I looked everywhere, but from my spot on the couch, I really couldn't see it. It was seriously just gone." What happened next was too painful for Rich to discuss, however, roommate and long time friend Steven Peters remembers the incident with regret and sorrow, "We were watching Unsolved Mysteries, Lifetime airs it every night at 2 am-back to back episodes! It's not that we really like the show, it's just that the reenactments are really funny. Anyway, Unsolved Mysteries ended and I turned to Jeff, and I was like, 'Dude, change it,' and he was like, 'Dude, I don't have the remote,' and I was like, 'Dude, I don't have the remote,' and he was like, 'changing the channel, not it,' and I was like, 'fuck that, I'm not getting up,' and then it happened-the Lifetime Intimate Portrait of Delta Burke. There was nothing we could do 'cause he called not it, and I wasn't gonna fucking get up."
Rich remembers that it wasn't necessarily having to watch the Lifetime Intimate Portrait that was disturbing, but more, having to watch, as he puts it, "Delta getting mad ugly." "You see," said Rich, "Delta had a five year stint as Suzanne Sugarbaker on Designing Women, and she like, really loved that job-she even got like two Emmys for it-anyway, she got fired from that job, and then she got like, really, rea0lly fat. What was really scary though, was that I watched Designing Women once, and she seemed pretty ugly on that show, but she wasn't as nearly as ugly as she got after she got fired. I mean, damn, I hope I never get fired from anything."
Although Rich appeared damaged, and, quite frankly, frightened, by the events of the evening, Peters feels that it was not all bad. "Dude," said Peters, "Delta's been in mad movies and TV shows since she got fired from Designing Women. It's not like she just dropped off the face of the earth. I was really happy for her. It was nice to see that a strong woman could triumph over the oppressive male dominated society of Hollywood, and ultimately realize that it's not what's on the outside that makes her beautiful. Plus, I didn't have to get up and change the channel, fuck him for thinking I would."
When asked about the ultimate location of the television remote control Rich responded, "Oh, I was sitting on it."
