Prof. Jonathan Golove

Rock Music--MUS 265

REG# 282599

How can you lose? The only drawback to this class is that it's so entertaining and interesting that you may not take it as seriously as you could. OK, the other drawback is the strain on your short attention span that three straight hours of class may cause.

Now that we have the bad out of the way, note the goodness. Each class period basically consists of Professor Golove giving a bit of an introduction to an artist or form of rock and roll, then blasting the lecture hall with songs from two giant speakers, analyzing the songs, and then cranking some more. We spent a whole class and a half on the Beatles, then a class on the Rolling Stones. Even lectures on forms of music that I have no interest in are fully worthwhile because of the background information; it's like VH1's Behind the Music in that way.

Professor Golove obviously loves teaching this course, as well as the subject matter. Some choose to mock his air guitar or invisible drums as the songs play, but I fully support his symbolic rock-love-display. He knows much about rock and roll and is open to learning more from his students, as well.

Assignments include short papers on a concert review and song analysis, a quiz, and two tests. If one pays attention and attends class, the work is no problem. Golove isn't out to get you, just to spread rock knowledge.

If you have an interest in the music world, as I do, be sure to use this class to fill a Gen Ed. Honestly, it fills no requirements for me; I'm just taking it for fun.
