APY 105--Anthropology

Registration # 396541

By Amy Chapman

Robert Dentan is a professor of American Studies and Anthropology at UB who rocks. This upcoming fall semester he will be teaching an intro to anthropology course (APY 105) that anyone with an interest in human behavior, sex, evolution, and the fate of the world should register for. Dentan is one of those rare professors who has the ability to mesmerize his class by giving informative and provocative lectures, and showing equally informative and provocative films.

Dentan has spent much time studying and observing other cultures such as the Semai people of Malaysia, and has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. One of the greatest things about him is that he often delves into his own knowledge and his own experiences from past field-work. He then uses this knowledge to draw comparisons and discuss differences and similarities between other cultures and our own.

Despite being an introductory lecture, APY 105 is a class that stimulates thought and discussion. Even with a large lecture hall to contend with, Dentan manages to make the space seem more intimate by wandering up and down the isles while talking. For those who are fairly open-minded and interested in taking a class from someone who really has something worth teaching about, Dentan is a rockin’ option.
