What is Sub-Board I?

It’s rather astounding that many of my busy contacts really do not believe me when I tell them that by working at Generation Magazine I am, in actuality, working for a $5,000,000 corporation--Sub Board I (SBI). These same people had no idea that there was such a corporation, much less one of such magnitude on campus. This, of course, is a cyclical argument contingent upon time, as the general student turn over rate is about 4 years. Against my busy schedule, I found myself yeilding to this argument searching for the foundation of the many student services provided by SBI. To further humor this wheel of timely education, my secretary called the SBI secretary and we did lunch. Lunch proved to be full of lengthy conversation that was imformative and it cured my ignorance for details.

Known by few, SBI is a non-profit organization which was entirely founded by students during the nation wide societal unrest within universities during the late sixties. The charter members of SBI glanced at the history of student organizations and their failure to accomplish adequate recognition, as well as acquire positive authority under the university’s jurisdiction. This negativity proved positive as SBI was conceived. Owned and operated fully by students for the last thirty years, this organization is a rather unusual entity within the American university infrastructure--due to the fact that it is one of a very small number of stable institutions that is entirely selfsufficient and separate from its home university.

SBI is involved in the collection of student activity fees, which is its main source of funding for its necessary operations. These operations are sub divided into divisions and services respectively. The entertainment division harbors the ticket office, WRUB--the radio station, University Union Activities Board (UUAB) which is SBI’s entertainment and cultural programming divison, and, of course, Generation Magazine. The health division encompasses the Clinical Lab, Student Medical Insurance, SBI Pharmacy, Health Education and Human Services (HEHS), as well as the Anti-Rape Task Force, and AIDS Coalition and Players--who are entertaining AIDS educators. Off Campus Housing as well as Group Legal Services and Information Systems are also included under the administration of SBI.

Not as a yearly routine, but as an annual informative session, SBI holds a distinct day where all divisions and services join together to humor the aforementioned argument by displaying their collaborative mission. SBI employees will be hawking their wares and passing out condoms, free hotdogs, pizza, and pop--not to mention information about all divisions. The ARTF calendar unveiling will feature the UB Real men, and the Men’s March Against Violence (starting at the Linda Yalem Memorial and finishing at the Student Union. The march is open to all men who are interested, and women are welcome to cheer from the sidelines), as well as birthday cake celebrating the the 30th anniversary of SBI, will be headlining this year’s SBI day in the Student Union Lobby. Wednesday, April 4, 2001 will be the culmination of 30 years of necessary and influential service that the students working at SBI have continued bringing to you. You are more than welcome to jump up to the SBI office where Ro and her little girlfriends will forward you any information before, during, or after SBI day. Their office is in 341 Student Union, and they usually have an yummy treat or two.
